In 2015, world leaders signed the historic Paris Agreement, which pledged to hold the rise in global temperatures to under two degrees Celsius. As a part of the climate accord, governments also agreed to track their progress and report back every few years.
COP28 marks the first of such "global stocktake" years, during which countries will have the opportunity to collectively measure their progress in combatting climate change, and assess how much work remains to be done.
Carnegie senior fellow and Global Order and Institutions Program director Stewart Patrick explains more about the global stocktake and its implications for the climate crisis.
