I installed all the walls of this entire shower without ANY spacers, not even 1. This tile is porcelain, but each one is intentionally made slightly irregular in size. As you see in the video, if you used uniform spacers, you're joints will start to get off, even with just a few rows. In my beginning years as a tile installer, I would use a combination of spacers & small wedges to compensate for the tiles inherent irregularities. Installing with spacers & wedges takes alot of unnecessary time & patience, as you would have to level each row as you go.
I learned a version of this method from a master craftsman, where we would install these types of tile without spacers, and without non-sag thinset!! Maybe, I'll share that method one day....;)
But the method I'm sharing in this video is alot quicker & easier than using spacers & wedges. The biggest secret is to use Non-Sag Thinset. My friends at Arizona Tile told me about this new thinset by Custom Building Products called Versabond LITE.
Here are a few great features of Versabond LITE:
- It has higher bond strength than regular Versabond & Versabond LFT
- It's suited for Large Format Tile installations, so it can be used in place of LFT
- it has Non-Sag & Non-Slump Properties that can be used up to 3/4" thick
- each bag only weighs 35 lbs, with the same amount of coverage as a 50lb versabond bag
I decided to try this thinset out with this irregular tile, for the non-sag properties & bond strength. As you see in the video, it worked amazingly for this shower. The non-sag properties held up so great that I didn't even need to use 1 spacer or wedge. I would normally use Pro-Lite Thinset by Custom Building Products, for it's Non-Sag benefits, But Versabond LITE costs less and has great bond strength. I will still stick to Pro-Lite for glass applications, but for porcelain & ceramic til, I will be using Versabond LITE from now on.
