I put hydrofoils on my Hydrofield when I had that because someone told me they would improve the ride and performance. I didn’t know anything much about them then other than what I had heard by word of mouth so I thought I would give them a try. I couldn’t detect any difference. I was disappointed to say the least and I have not bothered with them since.

Until now.

People have been talking about how much they improve the handling of a Baysport, so I did some research online. It now appears that because the Hydrofield was bigger and much heavier, I should not have expected very much improvement in ride or handling. The Baysport on the other hand is a light boat for its size and adding the foil has made a quantifiable difference, for the better.

I chose a hydrofoil that did not require me to drill holes in my cavitation plate for the experiment and I am very happy with the result. In this video I go through fitting the foil and then testing it on the water. I get some measurements on how much difference the modification has made.

Every boat design will be different and the results will vary from boat to boat. I am extremely happy with the results on my Baysport 620 Offshore. In fact, the improvement in fuel efficiency that I measured will pay for the foil fairly quickly, if I don't trade it for more speed.
