The Vikalp Scheme, introduced by Indian Railways in 2015, provides an option for passengers on the waiting list to get confirmed tickets on alternate trains.
If a passenger's ticket is not confirmed when the charts are prepared, they can be shifted to another train with available seats.
Passengers can choose up to 7 trains, and the system will automatically transfer them to trains departing within 30 minutes to 72 hours of their original train.
There are no extra charges or refunds for using the Vikalp Scheme, and passengers will be transferred to the same class as their original ticket.
However, Vikalp does not guarantee a confirmed ticket, and cancellation charges will apply as per the rules of the alternate train.
In 2023-24, 57,200 passengers were able to get confirmed tickets through the Vikalp Scheme.
