STORYLINE:

Interim Afghan leader Hamid Karzai received a red carpet welcome in Tehran on Sunday when he met with Iranian president Mohammed Khatami amid renewed U.S. accusations that Iran is seeking to destabilize neighbouring Afghanistan.

Iran denies the U.S. charges and says it supports Karzai.

Karzai was accompanied on his trip by 10 Cabinet ministers and other officials.

Karzai and Khatami greeted each other warmly, and joked as they posed for photographers outside Saadabad Palace in northern Tehran.

The two leaders are expected to discuss improving bilateral ties and returning Afghan refugees to their country.
