Facebook plans to partner with Eutelsat as part of its Internet.org initiative to bring internet to billions of people around the world, starting by launching a new satellite that will provide Internet access to parts of Sub-Saharan Africa.
Most of Africa is still beyond the range of traditional fixed and mobile terrestrial network connections, especially the Sub-Saharan African region.
To help developing countries connect to the world of internet, Facebook and French satellite company Eutelsat will launch Spacecom’s satellite AMOS-6 and utilize it to deliver free internet access.
Facebook chief executive officer, Mark Zuckerberg, said in a post online that Internet.org’s network infrastructure already includes drones and a laser communication system that are now undergoing lab tests. However, this is its first project aimed at providing Internet access from space.
This project is part of Facebook’s broader Internet.org initiative that started back in 2013. The project is set to launch off in 2016.
