(11 Jan 2019) Macedonia's parliament approved constitutional changes to rename the country North Macedonia on Friday, under a deal with neighbouring Greece.
The move will clear the way for Macedonia to join NATO and potentially the European Union.
All 81 lawmakers present voted in favour of the constitutional amendments.
The remaining 29 opposition lawmakers abstained.
Prime Minister Zoran Zaev needed a minimum 80 votes to have the changes ratified.
Zaev said the bill being passed represented "final confirmation of our identity and our language".
For the deal to come into effect, Greece's parliament must now convene in the coming weeks to ratify it.
