Coronavirus infections are falling in parts of England offering scientists hope the current surge of cases will begin to decline. Experts at Cambridge University believe that the R rate, or the rate at which a person passes on coronavirus, has fallen below one in the south-east, London, north-east, west-midlands and the east of England. This means infections are falling in these areas, and the pandemic is on the downturn. In London, the R-rate could be as low as 0.6, after the city has been in tier 4 restrictions since 21st December and then in a national lockdown since the beginning of January. On Thursday 48,682 new cases were reported, which is down 7.5% from the same day last week.
