Israel has confirmed that infantry units and tanks have carried out incursions inside Gaza for the first time since the start of its war with Hamas.

Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, an Israeli military spokesman, said troops backed by tanks had mounted raids to attack Palestinian rocket crews and seek information on the location of hostages taken by Hamas.

The move came after Israel issued a warning to Palestinians living in northern Gaza to move south. It is believed that more than one million people live in the affected area. Hamas told the residents not to move.
