The 55th meeting of the GST Council, led by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and including state finance ministers, began today December 21, in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. This apex body for indirect taxes is anticipated to deliberate on key rate revisions for categories such as life and health insurance, luxury goods, and aviation turbine fuel (ATF).
When GST was introduced on July 1, 2017, five major commodities—crude oil, natural gas, petrol, diesel, and ATF—were excluded from its scope, with central and state governments continuing to impose excise duty and VAT. The inclusion of these commodities under GST has been a persistent demand from several industries, particularly aviation.
