What is Kokeshi Doll?
Kokeshi doll was initially made as a childen’s wooden toy in the Tohoku region in Japan. It was most popular from the Edo period to the Meiji period. Its production once got reduced after that. However, it came to be acknowledged with great favor among adults. They began collecting kokeshi dolls, and it revived the culture. Today, they are widely regarded with approval as traditional folk arts or artworks and are booming among some young people. There are 11 major production areas for kokeshi(Tsuchiyu, Yajiroh, Tohgatta, Naruko, Sakunami, Yamagata, Zaoh, Hijiori, Kijiyama, Nanbu, Tsugaru).
