Cinco de Mayo. What You Need to Know?
5 de Mayo. The first time I heard about it was when I came here to the US.
Some people came to me really excited telling me that they were celebrating something that I should be really excited about assuming that I already know what it was about
Ok. I had to just grab my head in my hands and try to explain. I am not Mexican. I am Colombian, different countries, cultures, and everything. Yes we are really different. We cannot handle spicy food, we have different music, different accents. Anyways.
I went to the cinco de Mayo celebration, but something didn't make me feel right
So I did some digging and I learned that maybe it is not so cool to “celebrate” cinco de mayo
Let’s gets started with how the celebration looks in Mexico. Wait what? No giant Margaritas and sombreros? No fake mustaches? What is going on here?
Hmmm something must be wrong. Let’s look at the celebration of the US. show drunk people
They must have the countries backwards.
Except they don’t. The reality is that cinco de Mayo is not widely celebrated in Mexico.
Talking like an American Bro. Tank top
Wait what? Isn’t it its indepence day? Dude. I'm just celebrating the richness of culture.
NOOOOOOO. You are not. Mexico independence day is September 16, which wouldn’t sound so catchy. Dieciséis de septiembre. Dsesis sepmtber. (Say it like a bro)
You are not really celebrating Mexican culture if you have no idea about Mexico and about what 5 de Mayo really is about.
Ok,
So 5 de Mayo is the celebration of the battle of Puebla in which Mexican troops defeated French troops who tried to invade Mexico as a way of forcing them to pay their international debts. The holiday is remembered in Mexico but not celebrated. What happened that even though the Mexicans won the battle the French later went to win the war and occupied a large part of the Mexican territory. It was a historical event that is commemorated in some parts of Mexico, not celebrated drinking tequila shots.
The second reason is that cinco de mayo celebrations just play on stereotypes and make a caricature of Mexicans. Take for example former arkansas governor Huckabee who found this tweet quite funny. Or take how people dress and they act during this holiday. Also remember this tweet “ I love hispanics” ?
In the 1960’s many Mexicans did use 5 de mayo as a way to celebrate their heritage and their identity as Mexican Americans or Mexican Immigrants.
Nowthe celebration has been appropriate and made into something disrespectful. Look if you wanna get drunk and wear stupid shit, just go ahead and do it. Choose another day! 420, Beervemver 2. Whatever, but it is not okay to take another culture ridicule it and make it your own. Allow cinco de Mayo to be celebrated by Mexican immigrants if they want to and their way. Remember we can do much better that this
