It's fresh out of a Hallmark card, or the Hallmark channel during the holidays. But we can't even Christmas without racism smh. Cullman, Alabama caught the attention of ‘Southern Living’ which named the city of nearly 20,000 one of the “cutest Christmas towns in the South.” The article noted the market was “in the perfect small town.”
Cullman is enjoying the spotlight this holiday season as visitors flock to a celebration of the Alabama city’s German roots -- the Christkindlmarkt. Featuring a Weihnachtspyramide, a 40-foot-tall Christmas pyramid that is the country’s tallest, the one-of-a-kind Christmas market also offers an ice-skating rink, Ferris wheel, and a life-size nativity scene.
The Alabama town, where just over 1% of residents are Black, has now been forced to confront the racist ghost of its past after a TikTok video sparked widespread discussion over a decades-long reputation as a “sundown town” – a place Black people should flee before nightfall.
