Employing bullocks and tractors for agricultural purposes is a traditional and very conventional method in India’s rural areas. Efficient harnessing of animal power however remains ignored with the increase in use of fossil fuel and electricity. The Rural Technology Action Group (RuTAG) IIT Delhi took the initiative for finding solutions to these issues. A better and efficient Bullock Driven Tractor (BDT) have been designed. It incorporates mechanism for lifting attachments. It is lightweight and user friendly.
Area of the Project:
• Agriculture, Farming equipment.
Challenges:
• Required mechanism for lifting the attachments such as harrow, cultivator, etc. during turning of bullocks.
• Fatigue & stress on the bullocks due to heavy weight of tractor & attachments.
• Difficult to work in clayey soil.
• Not affordable for the farmers of small land holdings.
Salient Features and Advantages:
• Modified BDT is more efficient than the conventional plough.
• It utilizes characteristics of a modern tractor, like providing comfort to the tiller.
• Steel Rope & Winch mechanism is incorporated in modified BDT for lifting attachments such as harrow, cultivator, etc.
• The incorporated mechanism is easy in operation & is cost effective.
• The iron chair has been replaced with a used-car chair to increase comfort of the farmer.
Impact of the Technology:
• Efficient harnessing of animal power.
• Farmers from small land holdings can get a relief from increasing price of the fossil fuel and electricity.
• Environment friendly.
Success Stories:
• Currently, it is being used in M. P. and Haryana.
• Vendors have been identified for fabrication, manufacturing and assembly.
