Catherine Alix-Panabieres, PhD, University Medical Center of Montpellier, Montpellier, France, outlines the main challenges for implementing liquid biopsy in clinical practice, including more standardization of procedures and the undertaking of more interventional clinical trials. So far, a French interventional trial has demonstrated the clinical utility of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in metastatic breast cancer. Moreover, more research is required to understand which circulating biomarkers can provide the correct information about a cancer.
