What did the Ancient Romans really think about Jesus of Nazareth? Let’s take a quick look.
To most Romans, Jesus was just an obscure preacher in a distant province of Judea. Roman authorities, like Pontius Pilate, saw him as a potential political threat, especially when crowds began calling him a king. Seen as a seditious act against Caesar. Which led to the crucifixion.
After Jesuses death, his followers traveled and preached his teachings. Many Romans dismissed Christianity as a strange cult and cannibals “eating the body and blood of Christ.”
Writers like Tacitus and Suetonius briefly mention Jesus or Christians, but their focus was often on the movement, not the man. Referring to it as "pernicious superstition" spreading through the empire. It wasn’t until 313 AD that Emperor Constantine embraced Christianity. Making it the official religion on the Empire.
