Dr. Awinder Singh is a Hepatobiliary Surgeon at CHI Health. A Hepatobiliary Surgeon specializes in disorders of the liver, bile duct and pancreas.
Pancreatic surgery means a surgery of the liver, bile duct, and pancreas. These three organs work together in our bodies, which is why surgery can be complicated. When approaching issues in these organs, CHI Health doctors use a multi-team approach involving a gastroenterologist, pathologist, radiologist, and hepatobiliary surgeon. The most common problems of these areas come from cancers. The type of surgery done depends on the diagnosis.
For liver problems, it is common that a part of the liver may need to be removed. This will depend on the location and size of the tumor. A positive fact, is that the liver is the only human organ that can regrow! Additionally, we only need that 25 to 30% of the normal liver to live a healthy life. In cases where someone has an additional disease, such as cirrhosis, there may be a few other things that are taken into consideration before determining how much of the liver and tumor need to be removed. Similar to the liver, if a patient has cancer in the bile duct or pancreas, the type of surgery that is done will depend on the location and size of the tumor.
Surgery can be done in a few ways: open surgery, laparoscopic surgery, or robotic surgery.
If you or someone you know is having issues in these areas, seek care from your primary care provider.
