STORYLINE:
Romania's former King Michael I addressed parliament for the first time in 65 years on Tuesday, calling for more democracy in the country.
Speaking on his 90th birthday, Michael was applauded by hundreds of lawmakers, a few of whom responded with shouts of "Long live the king!"
Not every seat was filled though, as government ministers and President Traian Basescu refused to attend the address.
Michael, who initially ruled from 1927 to 1930, called for "faith in democracy, in the role and rules of institutions."
He returned to the throne from 1940 to 1947, but abdicated and began a life of exile in Britain and Switzerland.
He was stripped of his citizenship on abdication, but it was restored in 1997.
