Tens of thousands of Italians attended each of the two final rallies staged by the country's main political parties, ahead of Sunday's (21/4) national election. On Thursday (18/4), supporters of the centre-left "Olive Tree" coalition filled the historic Piazza del Popolo. They gave a rousing show of support to alliance leader Romano Prodi and six other party chiefs, including current acting premier Lamberto Dini. On Friday (19/4), the right-wing "Pole of Liberty" coalition staged its final rally in the Piazza Navona. The crowd gave its support to former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who was
flanked by coalition partner Gianfranco Fini (of the far-right Alleanza Nazionale Party), Pierferdinando Casini (Christian Democratic Centre Party) and Rocco Buttiglione (United Christian Democratic Party.)
