Quakers End Generals Streak
The Guilford College men's soccer team hosted Washington and Lee University in the regular season finale. The Quakers fought off the Generals to a commanding 3-0 victory backed by a two-goal night for Ryan Doyle and great keeper play by Roman Robinson.
Coming into the game, Washington and Lee was ranked seventh according to the United Soccer Coaches and ninth according D3soccer.com. At the same time, the Generals held a 15-game unbeaten streak.
The first half was anchored by outstanding defense and goalie play by Robinson, fighting off 13 shots with six saves. Guilford struggled to create chances in this half but managed to keep the game tied 0-0 going to the second half.
The second half was still full of General chances, but the Quaker's defense came together to keep WLU off the scorecard. Doyle scored his first of the night beating the visitor's goalkeeper on the bottom right corner at the 52:30 mark. Doyle's second goal came almost four minutes later (56:20) to double the lead, 2-0.
The Generals continued to create chances but were unsuccessful in capitalizing on them. They created 11 more shots this half with Robinson tallying two more great saves making eight saves on the night.
The final goal of the night came with less than seven minutes, scored by Osman Torres off a pass by Jesse Guzman to make the final score 3-0.
Guilford will now travel to Washington and Lee on Saturday, October 29 for the Quarterfinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament. Start time is to be announced.
