Pros and Cons of a 2.5-Day Silent Meditation Retreat at a Buddhist Monastery in Koh Samui, Thailand
Pros:
😀 Digital Detox: No phone or computer use allows you to fully experience yourself without the constant distractions of technology. This experience reminded me of how valuable it is to disconnect from the digital world.
😀 Simple Food: Eating to satisfy hunger rather than indulging in food sensations is a refreshing change. It’s a chance to experience how it feels to eat simply and mindfully.
😀 No Multitasking: This was a big one for me. Focusing on one task at a time without the pressure to multitask is incredibly liberating.
😀 Nature: Being surrounded by nature adds to the serene and peaceful environment of the retreat.
😀 No A/C: Experiencing the natural environment without constantly adjusting comfort levels was eye-opening. Feeling the sweat, being without A/C, and using candlelight at night in the jungle made the experience raw and authentic.
😀 Deeper Self-Connection: These conditions are perfect for experiencing the deeper self that exists beyond our busy minds. The absence of digital distractions and pleasure-seeking activities was amazing, and I realized I want to do more of it in the future.
Cons:
😀None. My comfort-seeking parts would say the conditions were very basic, with simple accommodation, toilets, and no windows. However, I know this is part of the experience and it was perfect for what it aimed to achieve.
Recommendation:
I highly recommend this experience. In Thailand, there are many of these monasteries you can attend on a donation basis.
