Octopuses are just the oceans friendly neighborhood shape shifters they can fit through tiny cracks, change color, camoflage themselves… but at the heart of all this ocean ninja wizardry is 3 hearts, 9 brains and blue blood.
Two of their 3 hearts work exclusively to move blood around the gills while the third heard keeps circulation to their organs. When octopi swim, their organ heart stops being, which is why you’ll usually see them crawling and not ghosting off into the abyss.
Each octopus also contains one central brain that functions as a process and 8 individual brains that functionas preprocessors on each tentacle. 2/3rds of all of the neurons in an octopus are contained in the tentacles. This gives the octopus amazing abilities of sensing through feeling.
Backing all this unusual anatomy up even further, octopodes blood is blue. Their blood contains a copper based chemical called cyanoglobin, as opposed to humans hemoglobin. They function to help carry oxygen, but cyanoglobin is slightly less effective and also makes their blood blue. Because of this lower efficiency, you won’t see octopuses running marathons anytime soon.
