(24 Mar 2015) Hundreds of Chilean protesters gathered outside the presidential palace in Santiago on Monday, demanding the creation of a new constitution amid corruption allegations within President Michelle Bachelet's government.
Demonstrators called for the formation of a Constitutional Assembly, to overhaul the current constitution.
A spokesperson for Choose Constitutional Assembly, the group behind the protest, Mariana Loyola, said people are calling for a plebiscite on the issue.
"We have been living for so many years with a corrupt constitution, illegitimate constitution made within four walls for the elite," Loyola said.
Chile's corruption is among the lowest in South America, but trust in politicians has been eroded by several scandals, including a loans controversy involving Bachelet's son.
Earlier this month, the leader of the nation's right wing Democratic Union Party and another legislator quit over a campaign finance scandal.
Two Chilean businessmen and four associates are facing charges of tax fraud, bribery, and illegal financing a campaign of right wing politicians.
