To visit Tawang Monastery in Arunachal Pradesh, India, requires a special permit.
It is not easy or cheap to obtain, but is absolutely worth the efforts.
It also requires days of travel over rough roads packed inside the local transport, which are Chinese made 4x4s they refer to as a 'Sumo'.
The region is traditionally Tibetan Buddhist, and retains its cultural heritage and seems nothing like 'mainland India'.
