U-87 MG Cell Line:
Glioblastoma is notoriously difficult to fully treat, partially because it is comprised of so many different cell types that have varying responses to chemotherapy. Originating from astrocytes, glioblastoma is one of the deadliest and most aggressive human cancers. Human brain tumor cell models are essential in identifying new treatments to help glioblastoma patients. U-87 MG human glioblastoma cells were first derived from a Caucasian female patient with glioblastoma multiforme in stage III. U-87 MG cells are epithelial, have a hypodiploid karyotype and have a 44 modal chromosome number observed in 48% of the cells. The U-87 MG cell line glioblastoma model is widely used in investigating novel chemotherapies. Many of these studies use U-87 MG cells in transfection studies to evaluate potential drug toxicology.
