As the rematch five years in the making with Victor Ortiz looms, former welterweight world champion Andre Berto reflects on what went wrong in his preparation that led to his first career defeat in 2011.
At the time, Berto was one of boxing’s true rising stars, and next in line to face Floyd Mayweather. All he had to do was get past the relatively unknown Ortiz in order to propel himself onto boxing’s biggest stage. Things didn’t go as planned, as Berto lost what many observers considered to be the Fight of the Year in 2011.
Both fighters have taken very different paths, filled with peaks and valleys, back to this juncture, as they meet at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., on April 30th, 2016, on FOX. In Berto’s case, that first career loss then started him down a path that saw him suffer three more defeats - including one in September 2015 to Mayweather in his farewell fight – and overcome a career-threatening shoulder injury.
But that’s all in the past. With a healthy body, a healthy mind and a new lease on his career, Berto sees nothing but bright days ahead.
Berto has revenge on his mind entering his second showdown with Victor Ortiz. And as the entire welterweight division jockeys for position to fill the top spot left by Mayweather’s retirement, Berto knows that a win over Ortiz could lift him to another opportunity to take the top spot in one of boxing’s true glamour divisions.
