Every December, 'The Polar Express' specials are the Wensleydale Railway's primary source of income, taking thousands of families for a journey from Leeming Bar to the magical land of the North Pole. For the last two years, their engine of choice has been the dependable LMS Stanier 5MT 45407 'The Lancashire Fusilier', suitably dolled up with an American-style cowcatcher, bell, headlamps and chime whistle.
Thanks to an agreement with owner Ian Riley, the WR is permitted to run two days of 'Mince Pie Specials', offering a steam-hauled service to Leyburn to blow the post-Christmas cobwebs away. Three round trips were run over each day on the twelve-mile stretch of line between Leeming Bar and Leyburn. As steam on the Wensleydale line has become something of a rarity nowadays, I took the opportunity to spend my Christmas bank holiday capturing the 'Fusilier' on its assault across the dales.
The weather was unsurprisingly wintry: damp, drizzly and murky with no sign of sunshine in sight. This did make finding lineside locations particularly difficult, as much of the landscape had become a quagmire and several footpaths became impassable. Despite being billed as steam-hauled, Class 33 33035 was added to the consist, most likely to assist with braking or steam-heating capability. Nevertheless, all trains were sold out and plenty of locals were out in force to wish the Black Five well.
I hope you all enjoy the video. Whilst some of my shots were somewhat hit-and-miss, I still had a great time revisiting the Wensleydale branch. Thanks to all who helped to make the event possible. Feel free to comment and subscribe!
