#Waves Sibilance is a #DeEsser that differs in that it uses Organic ReSynthesis technology which is able to separate the signal into smaller components such as pitch, formant, amplitude, carrier, etc and modify only one of them without altering the others, which gives a final result more natural. It was free for a few days after its release.
A DeEsser is a mechanism that detects the sounds of S, Sh and other consonants that can be annoying to the ear and reduces them to produce a more pleasing #vocal tone.
1- First use MONITOR to listen to the information that the plugin will reduce.
2- Then use THRESHOLD until you hear that all the S of the track are being processed (this process is represented in the graph with two green lines that go up and down).
3- Then use DETECTION to determine the range of frequencies where the plugin will search for unwanted sounds. Minor values detect only S sounds while higher values include other sounds that can also be annoying such as F, J, T and breaths.
4- RANGE determines the amount of reduction that will be applied to the detected consonants. A value of 0 is equivalent to BYPASS but Sibilance can reduce signal up to -48dB (PROVIDED THAT THRESHOLD HAS BEEN SET TO REACH THAT AMOUNT OF SIGNAL). This control is the same we can find in other Waves plugins like Renn DeEsser and C4/C6 Multiband compressors. For this step it is advisable to turn off MONITOR, while many consonant sounds are problematic, we would not want to completely extinguish them either. The amount of reduced signal is clearly visible at the top of the graph as a yellow line. This is our favorite display method for compressors and other dynamic processors.
5- MODE changes the shape of the area of frequencies that are going to be reduced. Higher values act as a high shelf filter above 4kHz while lower values will affect the entire range of frequencies cached by DETECTION and THRESHOLD.
