Surgical treatment of Esophageal obstruction (partial thoracic) & Traumatic reticulitis in buffalo

A rare case of partial esophageal obstruction in the thoracic part of the esophagus and TR. The Buffalo was pregnant (8 months), temperature 38.5 C, she stopped eating for 3 days, she ate very small amount of food and drink water then she regurgitate the food and water, no symptoms of Tympani existed. Clinically we couldn't examine the patency of the esophagus by stomach tube due to the vicious temper of the animal and the late pregnancy status, moreover radiography wasn't helpful as she has wide chest and the available x-ray apparatus in the locality is not strong enough to to deal with chest and abdomen of large ruminants. Examination by Hauptner metal detector revealed presence of metallic foreign body in the reticulum too. Preliminary diagnosis was partial esophageal obstruction in the thoracic area in addition to traumatic reticulitis. Exploratory laparotomy under request of the owner revealed presence of plastic slipper 10 cm up to the cardiac opening that caused partial esophageal obstruction in addition to presence of floating and penetrating metal nails in the reticulum
