Do you guys use a tailor’s awl for sewing? I find it to be an excellent tool, perfect for marking everything from buttonholes to darts. I know it can be a bit intimidating to punch a hole in your precious fabrics, but if we get over that fear we will be rewarded with a really quick way to mark all sorts of things.

This is also a tool that is common in the sewing industry, and why not nick a trick or two from them!

THE QUICK AND EASY WAY TO SEW DARTS
My preferred method for sewing darts that is also super quick – with minimal marking and prep work. This method works best for straight darts, for curved ones I often have to rely on some kind of line marking.

HOW TO MARK PLEATS WITH AN AWL
for kick pleats and such this is really a fantastic and quick method. And don’t worry about ruining the fabric, mostly you’ll just push away the threads and after washing (or just a dab of water) most holes will be invisible. Also I have two awls, one smaller for delicate fabrics and one thicker which is great for sturdy fabrics

MAKING MANY BUTTONHOLES QUICKLY
This method eliminates the need for meticulous markings since you only need to mark where the buttonhole should start. It works best for vertical buttonholes, but can also be used for horizontal ones, but that might require some additional markings.
