Petra is one of the oldest cities in the world. Petra is one of the new 7 wonders of the world. It's also a UNESCO World Heritage site. The name Petra means rock. Al-Khazneh, the most elaborate temple from Petra is carved out of a sandstone rock face. Petra is a royal resting place and was once a booming trading center. It has beautiful rock-cut architecture and a long time ago had an innovative water management system. Petra is called the Lost City because it was built around 312 BC and was rediscovered in modern times, by a Swiss explorer, in 1812 who uncovered Petra beneath ancient layers of sand. Petra was built by the Nabateans in South Jordan. The structures of Petra were carved out of giant sandstone canyons. Petra's fall was due to a shift in trade routes and two earthquakes. One can reach Petra after a walk in a narrow Canyon called Siq. This spectacular city carved from the surrounding cliffs was the seat of the Nabataean empire, of nomadic Bedouins, which thrived and then disappeared right around the time of Christ's birth.
