The MK-38 deck gun is a chain-driven auto-cannon which is fired in semi-automatic, burst, or automatic modes. The term "chain gun" means the use of a roller chain that drives the bolt back and forth. The Mk-38 Machine Gun is capable for shipboard defense against small, fast, and agile surface threats. Variants used by U.S. ground forces are the M242 Bushmaster.
