This winter I'm going to need another wood burning stove in my house, so I'm going to make one from an old butane gas cylinder / bottle..
The most important safety question to begin with is, "is the bottle empty?" I put an old regulator on it last night with the valve open, and stood the bottle upside down to drain, as butane is heavier than air.
Then, the hardest part - how to get the valve out of the bottle, which still contained fumes, without cutting or heating.
There are many ways to do it, I used one long lever to stop the bottle moving, and a tap spanner with an axe handle to turn it. Once it was loose I used an old spanner to finish unscrewing it.
Finally I filled the bottle with water to push out the last fumes.
