How to use pepper spray.
Pepper spray is one of the most popular and recommended self-defense tools. So we want to offer you our top 5 tips on how to use pepper spray properly.
1. Be Ready
Your pepper spray should be in your hand and ready to use before you need to actually use it in an emergency situation.
Every second counts and you do not have the luxury to fumble around to find, unlock, aim, and then use your pepper spray.
2. Grip Firmly
Hold your pepper spray with a fist and use your thumb to activate the trigger.
Using a fist that will hold your pepper spray will give you a superior grip that will help prevent you from dropping or losing your pepper spray; it will also help you have a more stable and accurate aim.
Using your thumb will also give you more dexterity to lock and unlock your pepper spray while maintaining a strong grip. Your thumb is also your strongest finger so it will be easier to activate and hold down the trigger to activate your pepper spray.
*Additional tip: holding your pepper spray in a fist will allow you to use that hand as a fist to punch and fight back easier if the situation arises.
3. Hold And Aim
A common misconception of how to use pepper spray is that you need to repeatedly press the trigger and shot bursts of spray at your attacker. The recommended way to use pepper spray is to hold down the trigger so that you are spraying your attacker with a continuous stream.
This will help you aim easier as you can adjust where you’re hitting the attacker while still detouring them with pepper spray.
4. Don’t Close Your Eyes
This may sound obvious but it is a natural tendency for people to close their eyes and look away when using pepper spray, especially if it is their first time using it.
You must keep your eyes open so that you can aim your pepper spray properly and so that you can keep your eyes on the attacker and your surroundings.
You do not have to worry much about your own spray getting back into your eyes. Newer pepper sprays are gel based and pressurized to create a focused stream that can spray a good distance away from you - making them less susceptible to the wind.
*Note: Spray your attacker from as far as your spray can reach. Most pepper sprays have a 5 ft- 10 ft range. You should not wait until the attacker is right in front of you before using your pepper spray. So you will need to test your pepper spray to see how far it can shoot.
5. Spray Don’t Stay
This is one of the most important things to remember when using pepper spray. You need to move to the side out of the immediate forward path of your attacker as you spray them because they will most likely lunge and attack where they saw you last, right before you pepper sprayed them and they lose their vision.
Moving away while spraying will also help prevent you from getting any spray back in case the attacker keeps advancing toward you while you’re spraying them.
Run to safety after you have used your pepper spray to temporarily blind your attacker and you feel safe enough to do so.
Practice. Practice. Practice!
We highly recommend you practice using your pepper spray so you know how it works and functions. This will help you be much more effective and less scared when needing to use it in a real-life situation. You can practice with your actual pepper spray in an open and safe spot or you can buy a practice, water-based spray canister.
We used this one in our video. But you can many others online.
