Malawi is investing about 10 million dollars in the cultivation of industrial hemp. While the cultivation or selling of cannabis sativa is prohibited by law, the government says the industrial hemp will help boost the economy. The Malawi kwacha came under pressure last year partially due to falling export revenues from the country's main crop, tobacco.
