Protests against the controversial remarks on Prophet Muhammed by suspended BJP leaders Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal across the country. Large gatherings, sloganeering and even stone-pelting have been reported today in multiple cities.
New Delhi: The members of the Muslim community staged protests on Friday across the country over inflammatory remarks by suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma and expelled leader Naveen Jindal against Prophet Muhammad.
The protests broke out after Friday prayers in several cities including Delhi, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Shopian, Srinagar, Kolkata, etc. In Delhi, people gathered in large numbers outside Jama Masjid and demanded the arrest of Nupur Sharma.
"People protested at Jama Masjid against the statements of suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma and expelled BJP leader Naveen Kumar Jindal. We have removed the people from there. The situation is under control now," the Delhi Police said.
- "I suddenly received info about this worrisome (protest) incident... public of Jharkhand has always been very sensitive and tolerant... no need to panic. I appeal to everyone to refrain from participating in any activities that will lead to more such crimes," Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren said on Ranchi violence.

Talking about the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh, Acting DGP Devendra Singh Chauhan said, "Preparations for Friday namaz were underway for the past 4-5 days. Police had done a public outreach... to maintain peace & order. Extensive police deployment was done today, due to which peace & harmony was maintained in UP."
"Police force dealt with the protests in Saharanpur, Prayagraj, Firozabad & Moradabad in a patient & strict manner, as a result of which there was no loss of life or property... all those who took law into their hands won't be spared. Our officials are safe," he added.
- "I would like to tell people of the state that the situation across Maharashtra is under control & peaceful. Everyone, from all religious backgrounds, must try & continue that peace. Police were prepared. Only peaceful protests were seen in state," Maharashtra HM Dilip Walse-Patil.
- Following the violence in the city over Nupur Sharma's comments, curfew has been imposed in violence-hit areas of Ranchi, said Ranchi District Administration.
"District Admn has imposed a curfew across Ranchi. We appeal to the people to stay home," announcement being made in Ranchi.
