More than 3,000 people in Tunisia marched against their government on Saturday at a rally organised by the powerful UGTT trade union. The march began at the iconic Mohamed Ali Hami plaza in the capital, Tunis. Protesters chanted various slogans including "Freedom, freedom” and “Down with the police state".
Tunisia has been engulfed in political and economic crises since July 2021, when President Kais Saied unilaterally suspended parliament and dissolved the government. He subsequently ruled by decree, before pushing through a new constitution that enshrined his one-man rule.
In the biggest crackdown since the president's power grab, police arrested around 20 prominent political figures over the past two weeks.
