In the 15th instalment of SSG’s Jobs-Skills Insights Webinar Series, we were joined by Chua Pei Ying, Lead of APAC Economic Graph from LinkedIn; Sharon Neo, Founder of Digital Influence Lab (DIL); Jael Chng, Co-founder and Chief Problem Solver of My Working Title; and Samir Bedi, Partner at Ernst & Young to discuss the impact of COVID on the labour market and the insights to recovery. The panelists shared their insights on navigating the uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The webinar focused on local market trends and highlighted major changes to job demands in sectors most impacted by COVID-19. The panellists shared their insights on navigating the uncertainty caused by COVID and the top skills that employers were looking for.
Key takeaways from the webinar include:
1. Changing Job Opportunites – A shift in job opportunities has been observed since the re-start of the local economy post circuit breaker, with more opportunities created in the Finance and Healthcare sectors, while there has been a slowdown in recruitment in the Tourism and Food Services sectors. The local workforce could move into opportunistic sectors by putting to use the transferable skills (e.g. problem solving, creativity and learning agility) they picked up from their current or previous jobs.
2. Going Digital and Greater Automation are Essential – The need for enterprises to go digital is even more crucial now to ensure continuity in operations and growth.Enterprises need to embrace the digitial journey; and employees will need to level up on data analytics, digital marketing and digital business analysis skills. Greater technology use and automation are equally important to improve efficiency and manage manpower shortage caused by COVID-19.
3. Having the Right Mindset & Attitude to Ride This Change – In light of the softer employment market, it is key for individuals to persevere and adapt to changing job opportunites as they continue their upskilling journey. Keeping an open mind, recognising the value and transferability of skills, leveraging recruitment platforms, mapping one’s learning and skills, and proactively sending out resumes are important.
