Knowing what to call this video has proved slightly difficult, as the place can go by so many names. Is the country Moldova, Transnistria, Pridnestrovia, and the town Bender, or Bendery? Whatever the you believe it should go by, we hope you understand the fact we aren't intending to offend anyone. The politics are complicated and we were just visiting observers.
The town itself, featuring a beautiful fortress, is dotted with a whole host of Soviet flourishes, including a USSR clad cafe, statues of Lenin and hammer and sickles. Alongside these, remains of so incredible wall mosaics are still around the second biggest town in Pridnestrovia (Transnistria) that are amazingly well preserved. We spent a lovely afternoon in Bendery, on a trip that felt like transporting ourselves back into the 80's and the former CCCP! This included a traditional meal in a Soviet themed canteen in a very Soviet looking bus station.
This part of Europe is so scarcely visited by tourists, it's truly off the beaten track. By visiting we learned a lot about a place few people have even heard of, and we only scratched the surface.
