This is a fun way to play chords in the key of A.
Here is how you build the chords in a key. Lets use the Key of A as our example.
A major scale = A B C# D E F# G# A
scale degrees = 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
This in how how you build the triads. Start on each scale degree and play every other note until you have 3 notes total.
If you build an A major scales on each of the strings (in this example, string group 2, 3, 4) in other words, three parallel A major scales and put them together you get all of your triad shapes. The major shapes are all the same, the minor shapes are all the same, and there is one diminished shape.
Major = 1 3 5
Minor = 1 b3 5
Diminished = 1 b3 b5
The pattern of chords is always the same Maj, min, min, Maj, Maj, min, dim
This video shows one of three sets of chords shapes for string group 1 2 3.
A C# E = A major
B D F# = B minor
C# E G# = C# minor
D F# A = D major
E G# B = E major
F# A C# = F# minor
G# B G = G# diminished
