On March 29, 2020, Commander Carnicle was shot and killed while attempting to resolve a barricade situation.
Earlier in the day, officers responded to a home in the area for a civil matter stand-by. The first two responding officers spoke with the suspect for an extended period asking him to leave; however, the suspect refused and barricaded himself inside the residence.
Commander Carnicle entered the home with three officers and made verbal contact with the suspect who continued to ignore the requests. The suspect remained upstairs and Commander Carnicle walked up the stairs followed by all three officers. The suspect emerged from a room and began shooting at the officers, striking Commander Carnicle and two other officers.
All three where transported to a local hospital, where Commander Carnicle succumbed to his injuries. The other two officers sustain significant gunshot injuries.
At the time of his death, Commander Carnicle was survived by his wife and four children.
