The 17th century Sindhi Sufi poet Shah Latif often spoke through the famous tragic love-legends of his region. This particular song speaks of the pain of Marui, a young girl from Maleer who is abducted by Umar, the powerful king of Umarkot. She unflinchingly resists his advances and is put to solitary confinement in a tower for her pains. She keeps her resolve alive - in the face of Umar’s threats and enticements - by the constant remembrance of her land, Maleer, and her cattle-herding folk, the Maaru. She prefers their huts to the palaces of the king. The ‘daastaan’ of Umar-Marui points to the importance of ‘zikr’, or remembrance - of who one truly is, and where one’s true home lies.
