The “Facilitating MSME Sustainability and Viability during COVID-19 Pandemic : Experience from the Africa Region” webinar focused on policy and industry perspectives to facilitate sustainability and viability of the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) during the COVID-19 pandemic, including emergency and recovery phases of policies and interventions that target women and youth. The participants discussed the impact of COVID-19 on women-led MSMEs and youth; regulatory and market solutions aligned to Africa context; and regulators’ support to MSMEs sustainability in the post-COVID-19 recovery phase.

COVID-19 has taken the world into an unprecedent pandemic scenario that has negatively impacted MSME’s globally, which represent more than 70 percent of global employment and 50 percent of GDP. Women-led MSMEs have been hit hardest and some of direct effects include business continuity, lower revenues, reduced demand for goods and services and cash flow shortages in Africa, MSMEs represent more than 90 percent of businesses and employ about 60 percent of workers. This is further compounded by a large informal sector that accounts for around 86 percent of total employment.
