Avenida Paulista is one of the most important places in the city of São Paulo, the capital of the homonymous state. It is located on the border between the Center-South, Central, and West zones; and in one of the highest regions of the city, called Espigão da Paulista. Considered one of the main financial centers of the city, as well as one of its most characteristic tourist spots, the avenue reveals its importance not only as an economic hub but also as a cultural and entertainment center.
The headquarters of many financial and cultural institutions are located on Avenida Paulista. As a symbol of the central economic and political power of São Paulo, it has been the focal point of numerous political protests beginning in 1929 and continuing into the 21st century. It is also home to an extensive shopping area and to South America's most comprehensive fine art museum, MASP. Being one of the highest points in São Paulo, it is clustered with radio and TV stations antennae, most notably that of Rede Gazeta. Avenida Paulista is a major hub of the subway and bus lines of the city.
