Berlin basically is one big open-air museum of 20th century history. It's the embodiment of the Cold War.
One of the most prominent physical remainders of the Cold War is a 1 mile stretch of Berlin Wall that can be found right opposite of the East Railway Station (Ost Bahnhof). This stretch of the Berlin Wall is called the East Side Gallery.
If you are new to Berlin, a visit to East Side Gallery is a must see. The Wall is covered with murals of international artists many of whom have conveyed messages regarding war and peace. Seeing and studying all of this can be a very profound experience.
By the way, all of it is open air public space that is freely accessable. The road next to it is very busy, but nonetheless it's a very interesting way to spend one or two hours on a summer afternoon.
