A series of earthquakes in Japan - the largest of magnitude 7.6 - has caused mass evacuations and left at least 48 people dead.

The earthquakes triggered tsunami warnings for almost all of the Sea of Japan coastline.

Japan is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, experiencing around 2,000 earthquakes per year.
