HMML's Fr. Columba Stewart describes a monument of early printing, the Glossa Ordinaria, a large glossed bible printed in 1480 - the first printed version of this famed text. The gloss refers to the marginal commentary that expounded on biblical passages. Authored by early church fathers and famous theologians - it became a standard text for Christian education in the Carolingian cathedral schools and later, in the medieval and early modern universities of Europe. This printed book mimics the layout of a glossed text as it appeared in manuscript, or handwritten, form in the centuries before the advent of the printing press. This copy is in HMML’s in-house Arca Artium collection, BS75 1480.
