Zinc chloride is corrosive, and the chlorine produced is toxic, so asthmatics must be warned, goggles must be worn to protect the eyes and the experiment must be carried out in a fume cupboard. The zinc cations are attracted to the cathode where they are reduced as they gain 2 electrons to form zinc atoms. The chloride anions are attracted to the anode where they are oxidised as they lose 1 electron to form chlorine atoms, which then covalently bond to form chlorine molecules.
