The precise period when Nowruz began as a festival is not known but some think it has been around for approximately 3,000 years. Ancient religious sources indicate that the celebration of Nowruz took place in ancient Persepolis, the ceremonial capital of Achaemenid Empire which existed from 550-330 BC.
A number of legends about the genesis of Nowruz talk about different magnificent personages. In one, a Persian mythical king named Jamshid flew on a chariot to sky during Spring’s first day and everyone on ground was so fascinated by this spectacle that they decided to start celebrating that day. Another version explains that Jamshid was instructed by a Zoroastrian god to fight his brother who stood for darkness and death and brought troubles.
