The Lost Melodies - 97
Manuscripts are living evidences of the past. Almost a neglected field, The study of manuscripts in music research plays an important role in not only unearthing new kritis, but also in understanding the repertoire of a particular lineage, versions available with them and the raga lakshanam prevailed in the past.
In the quest of getting back the lost melodies, we landed up in identifying the manuscript of Sri SA Ramaswamy Iyer, an illustrious disciple of both Valajapet Sri Krishnaswamy Bhagavathar and Umayalpuram Sri Krishna and Sundara Bhagavathar. This is a breakthrough in our research as it helped us to compare the versions seen in Valajapet notations.
This could have not been possible without the help of Sri Sriram Venkatakrishnan, Secretary, The Music Academy, who not only encouraged us to delve more into this , but also graciously allowed to see this invaluable material. We are much indebted to him.
Here is relatively a rare kriti of Sri Tyagaraja Svamigal in the ragam Jaganmohini reconstructed from the manuscript of SA Ramaswamy Iyer.
